ATKINSON, HENRY DOUGLAS (1864-1944)

ATKINSON, HENRY DOUGLAS, railwayman; b. Harcourt, N.B., 13 Apr 1864, s/o Thomas Atkinson and Mary Warman; m. Mary H. Branch, of Bathurst; d. Devon, N.B., 10 Dec 1944.

H. Douglas Atkinson retired from Canadian National Railways in 1931 after some forty-three years of service to that system and its predecessor, the Intercolonial Railway. He came to the Miramichi from Red Pine around 1892, and much of the rest of his service was as station agent at Derby Junction and telegrapher at Newcastle. "He was a man of striking qualities," stated the North Shore Leader, "well-known and highly respected." In his later years in Newcastle he was an elder of St James and St John Church.

Atkinson and his wife, Mary H. Branch, raised three daughters and three sons. Their eldest son, Gordon D. Atkinson (MD, Vermont), was a physician in Malden, Mass., and head of a naval hospital in the South Pacific during World War II. Their middle son, T. Howard Atkinson, entered the Royal Bank in Newcastle in 1911, and after an absence to serve in World War I (during which he won the Military Cross at Passchendaele), rose to be general manager of the bank. Their youngest son, Hammond J. Atkinson (PhD, McGill), was a soils scientist with the Department of Agriculture in Ottawa.
