THÉBERGE, JOSEPH (1832-1912)

THÉBERGE, JOSEPH, Catholic parish priest, Bartibog, 1866-77, and Neguac, 1877-1906; b. Varennes, Lower Canada, 18 Feb 1832; ordained 1866; d. Tracadie, 11 Feb 1912.

Joseph Théberge was educated at the Collège de Terrebonne and came to Chatham in 1865. During the year that followed he taught at St Michael's male academy and finished his theological studies under Bishop James Rogers. Ordained at Chatham in 1866, he was assigned as the first resident priest at Bartibog in forty years. From 1826 to 1866 Bartibog was a mission of Nelson and Chatham, but the new Sts Peter and Paul Church was blessed there in 1853, and thirteen years later it again became a distinct parish.

While based at Bartibog, Théberge also served the church at Neguac. By 1877 the Acadian population there had grown to the point that Bartibog had to be divided into two parishes. Thus Father William Morriscy was assigned to Bartibog and Théberge was transferred to Neguac, where he remained for the duration of his ministry. He was a patient in the Hotel Dieu Hospital in Tracadie at the time of his death.
