WAYE, EDWARD (1957-1929)

WAYE, EDWARD, sportsmen's guide and outfitter; b. Newcastle, 12 Dec 1857, s/o John Waye and Mary Danford; m. 1882, Annie Elizabeth Allison, d/o James Allison and Elizabeth Rolfe; d. Trout Brook, 27 Aug 1929.

Edward ("Ned") Waye was one of the earliest and best-known guides and outfitters on the Northwest Miramichi. His business was conducted out of his home at Wayerton, and he had camps on South Little River Lake and elsewhere in what was called "Waye's Hunting Ground." Each season from the 1890s onward he guided a number of fishing and hunting parties, mostly from the United States. For many years he was the official guide of the Miramichi Fish & Game Club, of which Robert H. Armstrong was manager. "Ned Waye could do anything," stated the club's historian, "drive his team, pole a canoe, cook and smoke the salmon, and show a green fisherman where to put his fly."

Waye's activities made him a good many personal friends, and it was speculated in 1929 that the void left by his death would be hard to fill. He was survived by three daughters and four sons, his wife, Annie E. Allison, having predeceased him by three years.
