BRODIE, ROBERT MITCHELL (1881-1940)

BRODIE, ROBERT MITCHELL, Methodist and United Church minister, Millerton, Williamstown, and Trout Brook, 1924-26; b. Paisley, Scotland, 19 Jul 1881, s/o John Brodie and Rebecca Wilson; m. Maud Grace Barber, of London, England; d. near Rawdon, Hants Co., N.S., c19 Nov 1940.

Robert M. Brodie attended a commercial college in Paisley, Scotland, and one or more training institutions in London, England. Afterwards, he associated himself with the work of the Salvation Army. He came to New Brunswick as an ordained Methodist minister in 1915 and served that summer at Tabusintac. He was later at Dorchester for a year and in Prince Edward Island for eight years. He returned to the Miramichi in 1924 as minister of the Derby circuit of the church and remained until after the union of the Presbyterian and Methodist bodies in 1925.

In 1926 Brodie became the United Church minister at Buctouche. He later had pulpits in Nova Scotia and at Cap-aux-Os, on the Gaspé coast of Quebec. He was last stationed at Rawdon, in Hants County, N.S., and came to a tragic end there in 1940, at age fifty-nine, when he became lost and perished in the woods. He disappeared on 13 November, and a report published fifteen days later stated that he had not been found. A date of death of 19 November was later adopted for legal purposes. He was survived by his wife, Maud G. Barber, and at least one daughter.
