WOOD, JOHN (1885-1963)

WOOD, JOHN, Baptist minister, Whitneyville and Little Southwest, 1941-46; b. Portlethen, Kincardineshire, Scotland, 13 Mar 1885, s/o George Wood and Elizabeth Craig; m. 1907, Ann Elizabeth Carnie, also a native of Scotland; d. Calgary, Alta, 8 Jan 1963.

John Wood was educated at the Portlethen public school and in Aberdeen, Scotland. In early life he was a house painter and decorator, a trade which he continued to follow after immigrating to Canada in 1906. In 1907 his fiancée came from Scotland to join him, and they were married in Haileybury, Ont. Several years afterwards, he enrolled in the theological course for preachers at McMaster University and was graduated and ordained in 1914. He ministered in Ontario until 1921 and was then called to Lethbridge, Alta.

Wood came to New Brunswick in 1930 to be pastor of the Baptist church at Andover. He later ministered at Hawkshaw and in the Fredericton area. In 1941 he was invited to accept the pastorate of the churches at Whitneyville and Little Southwest, as successor to the Rev. LeBaron B. Estabrooks (b. 1900).

For the 100th anniversary of the church at Sillikers in 1945, Wood compiled an eight-page booklet entitled Historic Sketch: Little South West Baptist Church, 1845-1945. He left in 1946 for the Mactaquac field, where he had his last pastorate. He retired in 1952 and moved to Calgary, Alta. He was a supply minister during most of the years prior to his death in 1963, at age seventy-seven. Three sons and a daughter were named as his survivors.
