WOOD, ROBERT MICHAEL (1894-1981)

WOOD, ROBERT MICHAEL, railwayman; mayor of Chatham, 1949/50; b. Kent Junction, Kent Co., N.B., 21 Feb 1894, s/o James W. Wood and Mary I. Swetnam; m. 1st, 1912, Mary Veronica McAuley, of Main River, Kent Co., and 2nd, 1938, Estelle Katherine Dennis, d/o James Joseph Dennis and Mary Bertha Estey, of Upper Halcomb; d. Chatham, 6 Jun 1981.

Robert M. Wood started work with the Kent Northern Railway in 1911, and after several years with this small line joined the Intercolonial Railway, which was absorbed by Canadian National Railways in 1923. He was station agent at Chatham from 1919 until his retirement in 1958.

Wood served on the Chatham Town Council for six years and was elected to a two-year term as mayor. While he held office he was instrumental in reactivating the Miramichi Natural History Association, which had been dormant since the early 1930s. This led to the reopening of the association's museum, in which he took a personal interest, sometimes paying operational expenses from his own pocket. Little public support was forthcoming, however, and in 1961 arrangements were made for a tourist bureau to share the first floor of the museum building.

In his later years Wood was a school trustee in Chatham. He was the first president of the Hotel Dieu Hospital Association and played a part in the activities of the Knights of Columbus. A hunter and fisherman, he served for more than ten years as president of the local branch of the Fish and Game Protective Association. His many years of community service were rewarded in 1968, when he was made a Freeman of the town of Chatham. Five children were born of his marriage to Mary V. McAuley and four of his marriage to Estelle K. Dennis.
