ALLAN, JOHN MUNN (1848-1914)

ALLAN, JOHN MUNN, Presbyterian minister, St John's Church, Chatham, 1873-76; b. Brigus, Nfld, 1848, s/o William Allan, MD, and Susanna Ann Munden; m. 1877, Elizabeth Cunard Kerr, d/o George Kerr and Agnes Swayne; d. Bay of Islands, Nfld, 12 Aug 1914.

John M. Allan was educated at the Presbyterian college in Truro, N.S., and the universities of Dalhousie (1863-65; 1872-73) and Edinburgh. A BA was conferred on him by Dalhousie in 1873 prior to his ordination and induction at St John's Church, Chatham, and he was granted an MA in 1876. He was reputed to be "a kindly and self-sacrificing pastor and the most genial and companionable of men." He stayed only three years in Chatham, however, citing health reasons as the cause of his resignation in 1876.

Soon after their marriage in the summer of 1877, Allan and his wife, Elizabeth C. Kerr, set sail for Scotland. During the next eight years a number of children were born to them in Edinburgh, but they were not living there at all times. In the fall of 1880 they were on the island of Madeira, 300 miles off the west coast of Morocco, where Allan was preaching to a Presbyterian congregation in both English and Portuguese.

After he and his family returned to Canada in 1885, Allan served as minister of several churches in Nova Scotia. He did not have a church between 1897 and 1899, and in that period he preached again from time to time at St John's in Chatham. His last charge was at Cornerbrook, Nfld. He was survived in 1914 by his wife, Elizabeth C. Kerr, two daughters, and a son.
