CHOWEN, DANIEL ROBERT (1870-1965)

CHOWEN, DANIEL ROBERT, United Church minister, Boiestown, 1933-35; b. Highfield, P.E.I., 22 Apr 1870, s/o Henry Chowen and Sarah Dixon; m. Ursula J. Distant, of Prince Edward Island; d. Fredericton, 2 Apr 1965.

Daniel R. Chowen was educated at Prince of Wales College and Mount Allison University. He interrupted his studies to teach school for several years on the Island but satisfied requirements for the BA in 1898 and was ordained in the Methodist church in 1899. Except for two years when he was travelling secretary for the New Brunswick Temperance Alliance his ministry was conducted from Methodist and United Church pulpits in rural New Brunswick. When he resigned at Boiestown in 1935 he officially retired, but he continued to serve the missions of Napadogan and McGivney part time for twelve more years. He also preached again at Boiestown as a supply minister in 1942-43.

Chowen's wife, Ursula J. Distant, died in 1960. When he died in 1965, a few weeks before his ninety-fifth birthday, he left a son and two daughters.
