DAIGLE, FRANÇOIS MARCEL (1882-1960)

DAIGLE, FRANÇOIS MARCEL, Catholic priest and college teacher; b. St Louis de Kent, N.B., 13 Apr 1882, s/o Marcel Daigle and Marguerite Babineau; ordained 1910; d. Yarmouth, N.S., 29 Jan 1960.

François M. Daigle was educated at St Joseph's College at Memramcook and trained for the priesthood in Montreal and Rome. At the conclusion of his studies he was granted a doctorate in theology by the College of the Propaganda. After his return to New Brunswick he had pastoral appointments in Gloucester and Restigouche counties for approximately eleven years.

In 1923, when St Thomas College was brought under the control of the priests of the Chatham diocese, Daigle received a teaching appointment, and he was a member of faculty for the next thirteen years. In 1933 he was also made vicar-general of the diocese and was granted an honorary PhD by St Joseph's College. In 1937 he transferred to Moncton, where he became affiliated with Collège l'Assomption. Soon after his arrival in the city he founded the weekly newspaper L'Ordre Social, of which he was publisher for the next seven years. In 1942 he was named vicar-general of the Moncton diocese, and he retained this office until his retirement in 1958.

Daigle had a prelature from the Vatican and the title of "Monsignor." In 1950 he was granted an honorary PhD by St Thomas College. He was living in a retirement home at Yarmouth, N.S., at the time of his death.
