FRASER, JAMES MACDONELL (1882-1974)

FRASER, JAMES MACDONELL, Presbyterian minister, Black River and Napan, 1917-19; b. Cushing, Que., 30 Jul 1882, s/o the Rev. James Fraser and Grace Low Treadwell; m. 1st, 1913, Rebecca Hogg, of Shelburne, N.S., and 2nd, Sarah Radcliffe; d. Meaford, Ont., 26 Oct 1974.

After spending thirteen years as an employee of the Canadian Bank of Commerce in Ontario and Nova Scotia, James M. Fraser attended Dalhousie University (1912-14) to acquire the necessary academic background for admission to the Presbyterian College in Halifax. Ordained at Black River in 1917, he served for two years as minister of St Stephen's Church there and of Carmel Church at Napan. He then went to Harrington Harbour, Labrador, where he was a missionary and schoolteacher until 1921.

Fraser was subsequently a Presbyterian and United Church minister in Quebec and Ontario. In 1953, when he and his first wife, Rebecca Hogg, celebrated their fortieth wedding anniversary, they had two daughters and six sons. He retired at Meaford, near Owen Sound, Ont., in 1958.
