ARNOTT, HENRY (1870-1952)

ARNOTT, HENRY, Presbyterian minister, Newcastle, 1903-06; b. Glasgow, Scotland, 10 Aug 1870, s/o Henry Arnott Sr and Anne Carter; m. 1903, Janetta Main Melville, of Kirkcaldy, Scotland; d. Edinburgh, Scotland, 19 Mar 1952.

Henry Arnott was educated at the University of St Andrews and trained for the ministry at New College, Edinburgh, and the Presbyterian College in Montreal. He was ordained and inducted as the minister of St James Church, Newcastle, in May 1903, as successor to the Rev. William Aitken. He was the first minister in the 'Free Church' tradition to occupy the Newcastle pulpit. He was "admired and respected by all classes and creeds of the community," but his term was brief. He resigned in July 1906 and returned to Scotland, where he pursued the remainder of his ministry. He was pastor of the Free Presbyterian churches at Saline, Alva West, and Newbattle and gave two years of service to the YMCA in World War I. He died in retirement in Edinburgh, at age eighty-one, following a prolonged illness. He and his wife, Janetta M. Melville, had a daughter and a son who lived to adulthood, both of whom were physicians in Britain.
