GRANT, GEORGE ALEXANDER (1874-1954)

GRANT, GEORGE ALEXANDER, Presbyterian minister, Black River and Napan, 1910-16, and Blackville, 1918-22; b. San Fernando, Trinidad, 19 Jul 1874, s/o the Rev. Kenneth James Grant, DD, and Catherine Copeland; m. 1905, Agnes Jane Roy, of Merigomish, N.S.; d. New Glasgow, N.S., 23 Jun 1954.

George A. Grant, whose father was a missionary in Trinidad and author of the book, My Missionary Memories, was educated at Pictou Academy and Dalhousie University (BA 1896, MA 1898) and trained for the ministry at the Presbyterian College in Halifax. He was ordained in 1900 and appointed as a missionary in British Guiana in 1901, but he had to return to Canada in 1902 after contracting malaria.

Grant came to the Miramichi in 1910 from Lunenburg Co., N.S. He had always been "a painstakingly accurate student," and while residing at Black River, satisfied the requirements for a divinity degree from the Presbyterian College (BD 1912). He stayed for six years and then took a church in Nova Scotia. In 1918 he was called back to the Miramichi to be the minister at Blackville. During a four-year term there he continued to advance his reputation as "a scholarly preacher of the gospel." Except for the two Miramichi pastorates and a brief one in Prince Edward Island, he conducted his ministry under Presbyterian and United Church auspices in Nova Scotia. He retired in 1940 at New Glasgow. He was survived in 1954 by his wife, Agnes J. Roy, and a daughter.
