HARRIMAN, WILLIAM P. (1859-1932)

HARRIMAN, WILLIAM P., Newcastle postmaster, 1897-1906; b. Newcastle, 28 Mar 1859, s/o John Harriman and Margaret Donovan; m. 1890, Mary Rebecca Condron, d/o Edward Condron and Catherine Moore, of Chatham; d. Minneapolis, Minn., 24 Jun 1932.

The son of a Newcastle laborer, William P. Harriman worked as a dry-goods clerk before he was appointed postmaster at Newcastle in 1897, as successor to John Fish. The postmastership was one of the more prestigious positions to be had at that time and paid one of the best salaries. Harriman's performance in the job would appear to have been satisfactory, and he and his wife assumed different voluntary responsibilities in the town. In 1906 he taught a class in Christian doctrine for St Mary's Catholic parish, and his wife took a seat on the Newcastle School Board.

Harriman announced in February 1907, however, that he would be resigning from the post office in order to accept a position with a lumber firm in St Paul, Minn., which was headed by his brother-in-law, Frank Carter. The family moved to Minnesota soon afterwards, but he did not remain long in the lumber industry. By 1918 he was working in the sales field in Minneapolis. He was described in the official record of his death in 1932 as a department store salesman.

When the census of 1901 was taken, Harriman and his wife had four sons living at home with them.
