HOGAN, WILLIAM L. (1867-1945)

HOGAN, WILLIAM L., wholesale grocer; mayor of Chatham, 1938; b. Saint John, Aug 1867, s/o John Hogan and Mary O'Connor; m. 1900, Ellen H. Ryan, of Saint John; d. Chatham, 4 Nov 1945.

William L. Hogan came to Chatham from Saint John around 1900 and joined the grocery division of J. B. Snowball & Co. as a traveller. He was the manager of the division in 1906, when he decided to return to Saint John. From around 1914 to 1928 he was a travelling salesman for Baird & Peters, a Saint John wholesale grocery company, and during some or all of that period he was again based in Chatham. In 1928 he became a Sun Life insurance agent in the town. Later he and his son William J. Hogan had their own Chatham wholesale grocery business, the W. L. Hogan Co. Ltd.

Hogan was a Chatham town councillor for eight years and served as mayor in 1938 to complete the term of Daniel Desmond, who resigned. He was active in the Chatham Board of Trade and the Knights of Columbus. He and his wife, Ellen H. Ryan, had a daughter and three sons. Their son John J. Hogan was a squadron leader in the RCAF in World War II and later a lawyer in Halifax.
