JOHNSON, LEVI STEVENS (1842-1895)

JOHNSON, LEVI STEVENS, Methodist minister, Newcastle circuit, 1893-94; b. Head of Tatamagouche Bay, Colchester Co., N.S., 25 May 1842, s/o George Johnson and Mary Stevens; m. 1st, 1872, Sarah Jane Pickup, of Granville Ferry, N.S., and 2nd, 1892, Susan A. Lawrence, of Southampton, Cumberland Co., N.S.; d. Los Angeles, Cal., 20 Jun 1895.

Levi S. Johnson graduated from the Normal School in Saint John and taught for several years before enrolling at Mount Allison College to study theology. He was ordained in 1872 and served in a number of Maritime circuits, transferring to Newcastle from Baie Verte in 1893, as successor to the Rev. George Harrison. A highlight of his brief ministry was his conduct of the dedication service for a new Methodist church at Millerton on 19 November 1893.

After less than a year in Newcastle, Johnson retired due to illness. He was seeking better health through travel in California when he died there the next year. He left his second wife, Susan A. Lawrence, and five children.
