LOGGIE, WILLIAM STUART JR (1880-1941)

LOGGIE, WILLIAM STUART JR, doctor, insurance agent, and public health officer; b. Chatham, 11 Oct 1880, s/o William Stuart Loggie and Elspeth Burnett Kerr; brother of James Kerr Loggie; m. 1909, Mabel Gertrude Gould, of Shediac, N.B.; d. Chatham, 31 Aug 1941.

W. Stuart Loggie attended the Chatham Grammar School and was trained in medicine at McGill University (MD CM 1905). In 1913 he took up the study of ear, eye, nose, and throat surgery, but the next year he was advertising the "W. Stuart Loggie Insurance Agency" rather than a medical practice. Without vacating the insurance field he took on the task of conducting medical examinations of recruits for the 132nd Battalion in 1915. In 1916 he was a member of the staff of the new Miramichi Hospital and was scheduled for regular ward service. In 1917 he was unsuccessful in the Chatham mayoralty race. Later he served for a short time as an officer with the Canadian Medical Corps, being based at Saint John and in England. In 1922 he joined the New Brunswick Public Health Department, as health officer for the Miramichi district and medical inspector of schools for Northumberland County. He was still occupying these offices at the time of his death, when he was also chairman of the Northumberland Sub-district Board of Health.

Loggie was a Mason, an Oddfellow, and a member of the Presbyterian-United Church. He and his wife, Mabel G. Gould, had a daughter and a son. Their son, W. Renforth Loggie, returned to the Miramichi from Britain in 1962, after a long absence, to assume the position of secretary-treasurer of the W. S. Loggie Co. Ltd.
