MALTBY, THOMAS BAKER (1792-1857)

MALTBY, THOMAS BAKER, carpenter, cabinet maker, and casket builder; b. Scarborough, Yorkshire, England, 17 Jun 1792, s/o Thomas Maltby, Sr.; m. 1816, Margaret (Kirton) Stainsby, of Sunderland, Durham, England; d. Newcastle, 2 Feb 1857.

Thomas B. Maltby's father was "a seafaring man," and he himself served in the British navy's transport service during the Peninsular war. In the summer of 1817 he left England with his wife and eldest daughter and came to the Miramichi. The family settled at Newcastle, where he was one of the first carpenters. He was active in this trade for forty years and played a large part in the rebuilding of the town after the Miramichi Fire. He was a cabinet maker also, and a builder of caskets. He was in serious financial trouble in 1835 but continued in business.

Maltby and his wife, Margaret, had four sons and two daughters who lived to adulthood. Their daughter Margaret Maltby married Charles J. Simonds, a lawyer in Dalhousie who was a son of Richard Simonds. The sons included Thomas Maltby and John Maltby, a carpenter and merchant in Newcastle for many years who later moved his family to the United States.
