MIDDLETON, JAMES (1874-1943)

MIDDLETON, JAMES, Presbyterian minister, Millerton, 1933-35; b. Sheffield, England, 14 May 1874, s/o William Middleton and Elizabeth Moorehouse; m. 1907, Marie Selina Margaret Greene, of England; d. Malagash, N.S., 8 Jul 1943.

After attending Harley College in London, England, James Middleton was sent to Fortune Bay, Nfld, in 1901 as a missionary for the Congregational church, and he was ordained the next year. In 1911 he transferred to Nova Scotia and preached along the South Shore. In 1914 he joined the Presbyterian church, and between 1916 and 1922 he had Presbyterian charges at Quoddy, N.S., and Prince William, N.B. He later returned to England for nine years and also spent two years in Saskatchewan.

Middleton became pastor of the Millerton Presbyterian charge in 1933. He was preceded there by the Rev. David H. Williamson (1926-28), and several other, mostly short-term appointees, including the Rev. Alfred A. J. Hogg, a former United States army chaplain, who served between 1929 and 1931 and attended the laying of the cornerstone for St Stephen's Presbyterian Church at Sunny Corner in the spring of 1930. While based at Grace Church in Millerton, Middleton and the other Presbyterian clergymen of that period also preached at Derby, McKinleyville, and elsewhere in the district.

In the fall of 1935 Middleton moved to Sackville, N.B. His last charge was at Stanley. He retired in 1941 and was making his home at Malagash, N.S., with one of his three daughters at the time of his death. His wife, Marie S. M. Greene, predeceased him.
