MORROW, ROBERT (1800-1867)

MORROW, ROBERT, lumber business manager and churchman; b. Low Felling, Durham, England, 15 Jan 1800, s/o Robert Morrow and Mary Atkinson; m. 1826, Elizabeth Pallen, sister of John Pallen; d. Liverpool, England, 21 Jan 1867.

Robert Morrow came to Chatham from Guysborough, N.S., around 1824 and occupied a management position with Joseph Cunard & Co. for more than twenty years.

Morrow was a leading member of the first Methodist board of trustees in Chatham and had £400 raised and all arrangements made for the construction of a church before the Rev. Michael Pickles came to Chatham in 1830. He was later superintendent of the Sunday school and president for several years of the Miramichi (later the Chatham) Temperance Society.He was also one of the first volunteer firemen with the Chatham Fire Company, which was organized shortly after his arrival.

In 1845, Morrow departed for England with his wife and family. He was later head of Morrow, Son & Garbutt, timber merchants in Liverpool.
