T. Merlin Murray, a nephew of Michael Murray, was involved in a hardware business in Chatham for a number of years before he became an undertaker. At first his undertaking business was carried on in makeshift quarters, but he erected a funeral parlor in 1949.

Murray was a Chatham town councillor and mayor for one year. He served a term as president of the Chatham Board of Trade. In 1931 he was the county census commissioner. He was an unsuccessful candidate for the Conservative party in the provincial election of 1935.

Murray's wife, Mary R. ("Mayme") Gallivan, was a teacher for many years on the staff of the Chatham Grammar School.
