MACDIARMID, FINLEY ELDON (1899-1980)

MACDIARMID, FINLEY ELDON, native son; educator; b. Centre Napan, 31 Mar 1899, s/o Robert MacDiarmid and Catherine M. McKnight; m. 1922, Frances E. Wheaton; d. Fredericton, 24 Nov 1980.

F. Eldon MacDiarmid was educated at the Chatham Grammar School, the Provincial Normal School, Mount Allison University (BA 1930), and the University of New Brunswick (MA 1934). His first job was as principal of the school at Devon, N.B., beginning in the fall of 1920, and he was employed in Fredericton-area schools for several years. He was later principal of the grammar school at Woodstock. In 1933 he was named science master of the Provincial Normal School, and in 1949 he was appointed chief superintendent of education for New Brunswick. When this position was superseded by that of deputy minister in 1957-58 he was named to that position and continued to occupy it until his retirement in 1963.

MacDiarmid played a leadership role in a number of service clubs and community welfare organizations in Fredericton. He was the recipient of the Coronation (1952), Centennial (1967), and Jubilee (1977) medals and was a Knight of Grace of the Order of St John. He was survived in 1980 by his wife, Frances E. Wheaton, and two sons.

Remarques

The title "Dr" was commonly used in association with MacDiarmid's name, but no published reference to his having earned a doctorate was discovered.
