PARSONS, ELIJAH C. (1825-1896)

PARSONS, ELIJAH C., ship carpenter and master builder; b. Glenelg parish, c1825, s/o Elijah Parsons Sr and Jane McInnes; m. 1848, Elizabeth J. McDonald; d. Green Island, N.Y., 14 Sep 1896.

Between 1854 and 1864, Elijah Parsons was the master builder of at least twelve ocean-going vessels, for Robert Johnston Jr, William Muirhead, W. J. Fraser & Co., and Peter Mitchell. Typical of his workmanship and artistry were "the fine large ship" Jeddo and the barque Sunny Side ("a perfect model of beauty"), both of which he built for Mitchell in 1863.

In 1862, Parsons' only son was drowned in the river near Chatham, at age thirteen, and in 1868, his wife, Elizabeth McDonald, died at Newcastle, at age forty. He and his five surviving children relocated soon afterwards in Pembroke, Washington Co., Maine, where he continued to work as a ship carpenter. He was still living there in 1880 but his death, sixteen years later, occurred at Green Island, near Albany, N.Y. His grave is in a cemetery in the town of Menands, N.Y.
