PAULIN, JOSEPH DOMINIQUE (1873-1931)

PAULIN, JOSEPH DOMINIQUE, grocer; b. Caraquet, N.B., 18 May 1873, s/o Dominique Paulin and Blondine Gautreau; m. 1906, Gertrude Godin, of Petit Rocher, N.B.; d. Newcastle, 31 Jan 1931.

Joseph D. Paulin came to Newcastle as a young man and took employment with Patrick Hennessy. He later worked in the grocery store conducted by Michael Bannon. In 1907 he started his own store. In his dealings he was "fair and square with everyone and made hundreds of friends." He remained in business up to the time of his death.

Paulin was one of the incorporators of the Newcastle Steamboat Co. in 1910. In 1925 he was appointed to the County Almshouse Commission. He and his wife, Gertrude Godin, had five children who lived to maturity, several of whom entered the field of education. Notable among them was Mary Alma Paulin, the wife of George A. Driscoll, who was an award-winning student at St Francis Xavier University and later earned a doctorate in the social sciences at Laval.
