ROSS, ROBERT ALEXANDER (1896-1967)

ROSS, ROBERT ALEXANDER, United Church minister, Chatham, 1954-60; b. Boston, Mass., 31 May 1896, s/o John Ross and Mary Ferguson; m. Helen Campbell, RN, of Pembroke, Hants Co., N.S.; d. Newcastle, 20 May 1967.

Robert A. Ross, who moved to St Peter's, N.S., with his parents as a child, was educated at Pictou Academy and Dalhousie University (BSc 1918). His studies were interrupted by World War I, in which he went overseas with the Canadian Expeditionary Force. After the war he taught school at St Peter's, N.S., and at the Halifax Academy. He later trained for the ministry at Pine Hill Divinity Hall and Boston University (STB) and was ordained in 1927.

After being pastor of several churches on Cape Breton Island, Ross moved to Oak Bay, N.B., in 1948. He was called to St Andrew's United Church, Chatham, from there in 1954, as successor to the Rev. Sydney J. Hillier. He retired in Newcastle in 1960. He was survived in 1967 by his wife, Helen Campbell, two sons, and two daughters.
