TATTRIE, GEORGE PHILIP (1869-1927)

TATTRIE, GEORGE PHILIP, Presbyterian minister, Tabusintac and Burnt Church, 1913-21; b. River John, N.S., 23 Jul 1869, s/o John Tattrie and Catherine Fairweather; m. 1st, c1912, Mabel Sutherland, of New Carlisle, Que., and 2nd, 1921, Helen Simpson, d/o James Simpson and Katherine McLean, of Tabusintac; d. O'Leary, P.E.I., 9 Mar 1927.

George P. Tattrie, whose surname was of Swiss Huguenot origin, was educated at Pictou Academy and Dalhousie University (BA 1894) and trained for the ministry at the Presbyterian College in Halifax. Ordained in 1896, he served for eight years as a missionary on the Prairies and then continued his theological studies at Princeton University (BD 1905). Before being called to Tabusintac and Burnt Church in 1913 he was the minister for eight years at New Carlisle, Que. When he left the Miramichi in 1921 he went to O'Leary, P.E.I., where he died six years later.

Tattrie's first wife, Mabel Sutherland, died a year after their marriage, leaving an infant daughter. He was survived in 1927 by his second wife, Helen Simpson, and a young son, Lawson G. Tattrie, who became a civil engineer.
