ADAMS, ANTHONY ROGERS (1851-1929)

ADAMS, ANTHONY ROGERS, fish processor and shipper; b. Rogers Settlement, 12 Jul 1851, s/o Justus Adams and Mary McKay; m. 1885, Annie Perley, d/o Dudley Perley and Mary Fenton, of Chatham parish; d. Chatham, 16 Feb 1929.

In the 1870s and early 80s Anthony R. Adams was a partner of John Menzies on several railway and bridge construction jobs. At the same time, in the summer season, he was a fish processor and shipper, in business with his brother Robert A. Adams, and later with his brother John M. Adams. In 1879 the firm of R. & A. Adams, of North Esk parish, was the fifth largest shipper of fresh salmon from the Miramichi, accounting for five per cent of all salmon exported that year through the ports of Newcastle and Chatham, and the third largest shipper of bass, accounting for more than fifteen per cent of the total. In the late 1880s Anthony and John, as A. & J. Adams, were in business at Lower Neguac. They had a general store there and were engaged in the harvesting of a variety of species of fish. In 1887 they had an eighty-ton mackerel seiner fitted out for their use. The partnership was dissolved in the 1890s, and Anthony Adams later had a tugboat business in Chatham.

Adams was a county councillor for North Esk parish from 1880 to 1885, and later for Alnwick parish. He was elected county warden in 1882. He failed in a bid to win a seat in the House of Assembly in 1890 but subsequently served on the Chatham Town Council. He and his wife, Annie Perley, had a son.

Adams's brother Robert A. Adams gave the family name to the community of Strathadam in 1882 when he was appointed as the first postmaster. A sister, H. Ida (Adams) Mackeen, MD, was a pioneering woman physician in Minnesota.
