BLACK, JOHN (1764-1823)

BLACK, JOHN, non-resident businessman and MLA; b. Aberdeen, Scotland, c1764; m. 1st, 1797, Mary, widow of John McGeorge, and 2nd, 1807, Catherine Billopp, of Saint John; d. Aberdeen, 4 Sep 1823.

John Black came to Saint John in 1786 as an admiralty agent for navy masts. The next year, he entered business for himself, and he soon became a leading merchant, trading in lumber and other commodities throughout the province and the region. His home and business headquarters were in Saint John, but he established branches in a number of centers, including the Miramichi.

In 1793 Black let his name stand for one of the two Northumberland County seats in the House of Assembly, and he was returned by acclamation when his bid was uncontested. He sat until 1795 but did not reoffer in the election held that year. He moved to Halifax in 1808 and was appointed to the Nova Scotia Council in 1813. He died while visiting his home city of Aberdeen, Scotland, in 1823.
