Abstract No residence cited. St. John County records. Letter written 16 March 1828 at Port Maria, Jamaica, to wife Martha GRAY in care of William EMSLIE, Saint John, proved as his last will and testament on 30 October 1828. Statement of cargo, etc. for Brig "Tweed" which will inform you how I now stand with Thomas MILLIDGE & Co. There is the sum of $14,000. insured on the "Tweed" from 25 September 1827 to 25 September 1828 in New York, one quarter of which is on my account. Ordered insurance on my own account and risk £200 on my part of the freight and £400 on property on board from this port to the Island of St. Thomas and back to this place. Mentions sailing to London and ordering insurance on one quarter of the "Tweed" for 12 months for £875 St. John Currency and on the freight from here to London £450 Sterling for my quarter of the freight. Instructs wife, in the event of anything happening to me in this Country and the vessel proceed on her intended voyage under another Master, to have insurance on both vessel and freight in her own name, to have that policy in her own hands, and to request the "Tweed" to come home from London through the sanction and orders of Thos. MILLIDGE & Co and have her sold to the best advantage. States there will be sufficient sum due him to purchase two or three houses and requests she purchase property to the full amount so the rents may maintain her and "my two dear littel Children" and there will be something left for them when they are at age. Authorizes wife Martha GRAY, Mistress Mary KENNEDY and William W. EMSLIE, all of City of Saint John to be executors and guardians of children James GRAY and Mary [Elonder] GRAY.
