Bridgetown Monitor - Saturday afternoon last a party of six consisiting of Allen RICE and David RICE, the latter's two daughters, a Miss SABEAN, and a young man named Gilbert WELSH, crossed the Basin in a sail boat from Bear River, Digby and about sundown returned. Just after crossing the Joggin tide, a squall struck and upset the boat. Allen and David Rice, on coming to the surface, managed to reach the upturned boat, to which they clung until assistance arrived; but the three young ladies and the young man were all drowned. A boat was put off from the shore almost immediately but arrived too late to do more than pick off the two men and recover the bodies of Misses Rice. On Sunday morning the bodies of Miss Sabean and Mr. Welsh were recovered. The latter, who was a good swimmer, it is said lost his life in attempting to save the ladies. The funeral is to take place today.
