Notes:
. Full-text search queries are case-insensitive.
. Enclose simple terms with quotation marks when using boolean operators.
. The Rank value only indicates a relative order of relevance of the rows in the
result set as determined by the database server based on your query.
Simple terms
In the Search Criteria text box, enter the word or phrase you would like to search.
A word is one or more characters without spaces or punctuation. A valid phrase can
consist of multiple words with spaces, with or without punctuation between them.
Words and phrases such as these are called simple terms.
Examples:
"zulu"
This will return all records containing the word zulu.
"zulu war"
This will return all records containing the phrase zulu war.
Boolean operators
The following Boolean operators can be used in your search; AND, OR, AND NOT.
Examples:
"accident" AND "machine"
This will return all records with the words accident and machine in the text.
"soldier" OR "war" OR "boer"
This will return all records with text containing the words soldier or war or boer.
"execution" AND NOT "hanging"
This will return all records with text containing the word execution but not if
the record had the word hanging in the text.
Combinations can also be used:
"soldier" AND "execution" OR "firing squad" AND NOT "hanging"
This will return all records with text containing the word soldier and execution
or firing squad but not if the text contains the word hanging.
Inflectional form of a specific word
You can add this in addition to your search criteria or search on this alone. Inflectional
searches allow you to search for all the different tenses of a verb or both the
singular and plural forms of a noun.
Example:
Insert the simple term "accident" AND "machine" in the query text box. In the Inflectional
word text box, enter "foot"
This will return all records with the words accident and machine where there is
also the word foot or feet.
Prefix Searches with the asterisk (*)
All text that matches the text specified before the asterisk (*) is returned. Prefix searches can also be used in combination with Boolean operators and Inflectional word forms.
Example:
"execut*" AND "fredericton"
This will return all records with text that contains
words beginning with execut (such as execution, executed, or executioner) which
also contains the word Fredericton.
