DATES: 1863-1963
EXTENT: 10 cm (on one microfilm)
RESTRICTIONS: Register must be used on microfilm (see F8504).
INDEX: Nominal index of all appointments is available.
HISTORICAL BACKGROUND:
This register was kept by the Provincial Secretary to record the appointment
of Justices of the Peace in New Brunswick. It is divided by letter of the
alphabet and county of appointment. For most entries, it gives the name, date of
appointment, and sometimes date of death or resignation. From time to time, it
also indicates that an individual has left the Province.
SCOPE AND CONTENT:
To date, this is the only known such register of Justices of the Peace. The
index following is alphabetical showing the date of appointment, county of
appointment, and page upon which the appointment is registered. The entire
register is found on microfilm F8504. Other appointment records may be found at
the Provincial Archives in RS538 (Records of Warrants, Appointments, and
Commissions), as well as in RS6 (Orders-in-Council), but these are not yet on
microfilm.
