Fishing has long been an important industry in New Brunswick. The many kinds of fish caught in the waters of the province include herring. This fish is used for human consumption and as bait. Herring is fished with a net. When the fish have entered the net, it is lifted out of the water, and the catch is transferred to large containers on the deck of the boat. Next, the herring is either salted or smoked. This photo shows two men unloading herring from a fishing boat in Charlotte County. They are using ropes and pulleys to raise a net full of herring.
