Reference number: MC2946-D1

Place : Fredericton
Date : c 1840

Old Government House was built between 1826 and 1828 near the St. John River in Fredericton, on the site of the former Acadian village of Sainte-Anne. This building made of quarried sandstone has had several uses since its construction. First, it was the residence of 14 lieutenant-governors before being closed down in 1894. Later, it was a hospital for Canadian WWI veterans. The building again became the official residence of New Brunswick's lieutenant-governor on July 1, 1999.
This lithograph by Henry Bartlett depicts Old Government House from the vantage of the St. John River, circa 1840. Henry Bartlett, an English landscape artist born in 1809, created prints of New Brunswick scenes between 1836 and 1852 which were published in The London Illustrated News. He died in 1854.
