Colonel Thomas Carleton was born in Ireland in 1735. He was a career military man and was instrumental in evacuating the Loyalists from New York at the close of the American War of Independence. When New Brunswick was established in 1784, he was named governor of the new province and held that position until he died on February 2, 1817. Carleton chose Fredericton as the capital of New Brunswick and set up several of the military institutions that have marked the history of the province.
