Westmorland County: settled in 1755: Dorchester was an early centre for stone-quarrying and shipbuilding: first called Botsford for Amos Botsford (1742-1812), a Loyalist from Connecticut who settled at
Sackville and was Speaker of the New Brunswick House of Assembly from 1786-1812: renamed Dorchester by 1825: PO from 1825: sometimes referred to as Dorchester Corner: in 1866 it was a settlement with approximately 65 families: in 1871 Dorchester had a population of 800: in 1898 Dorchester was a seaport, a station on the Intercolonial Railway and a village with 10 stores, 1 hotel, 1 tannery, 2 carriage factories, 2 quarries, 1 shipyard, 3 churches and a population of 1,200: Dorchester was incorporated as a town in 1911 and a village in 1966.
