Located at the entrance to Saint John Harbour: William Francis Ganong identified the Maliseet name for Partridge Island as Quakm'kay'ganik: during the 17th Century the French named the Island Isle aux Perdrix: Partridge Island was a quarantine station: in 1871 it had 4 hospitals, a lighthouse with a fog whistle and a population of 25.
