Located 5.49 km WNW of Springdale and 12.73 km NE of Sussex: Cardwell Parish, Kings County: formerly called Narraguagus, Stumptown and Upper Settlement: PO Upper Sussex 1852-1865: in 1866 Upper Sussex was a farming community with approximately 55 resident families: PO Penobsquis from 1865: William Francis Ganong identified Penobsq', a Maliseet word meaning "stone brook", as the origin of the name Penobsquis: in 1866 Penobsquis was a farming settlement with approximately 16 resident families: in 1871 Penobsquis had a population of 400: in 1904 Penobsquis was a station on the Intercolonial Railway and a settlement with 1 post office, 3 stores, 3 hotels, 1 sawmill, 1 tannery, 1 cheese factory, 1 harness shop, 2 churches and a population of about 450.
