St. Ansgar’s Church, New Denmark, N.B. – [before April 1905]. – 1 photograph : b&w. Photographer unknown. Construction of this neo-Gothic church began in April 1877. Similar in form to a Danish country church, the structure was named after the missionary from France who reportedly carried the Christian message to Denmark in the ninth century. This church was destroyed by fire in April 1905. The altar, font, cross, candlesticks, communion vessels, and hangings were rescued from the flames and placed in the second St. Ansgar’s which was consecrated in 1909. In 2006, the original photograph is displayed in the church basement. Joyce Petersen borrowed and scanned it, in July 2006, for inclusion in this exhibit. Courtesy of Carolyn Howlett.
