Celebrating the Bicentennial

Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip made New Brunswick the first stop on the Royal itinerary in 1984, arriving at Moncton airport on 24 September. This visit was particularly special, for the Royal visitors were guests of honour at a variety of community events and celebrations marking our province’s 200th birthday. Using Moncton as a base, the Royal couple travelled to Shediac, Sackville, Riverview, and Fredericton during their three-day stay. Festivities at Moncton included a provincial dinner and an open-air reception. At Shediac, The Queen and Prince Philip joined in anniversary celebrations at St. Joseph Parish Church. The itinerary for Fredericton included a church service, a provincial luncheon, and a picnic. At the Legislative Buildings, Her Majesty was invited to celebrate the Bicentennial by granting augmentations to the provincial coat of arms. Queen Elizabeth spent the final day of the tour in Sackville while Prince Philip travelled to Riverview. The 1984 Royal tour came to a close at Moncton airport on 26 September with warm farewells and best wishes for memorable visits to Ontario and Manitoba – the next stops on the Royal itinerary.
