Place : Saint Basile
Date : c 1905
The Religious Hospitallers of St. Joseph arrived in St. Basile in 1873 and founded an institution for health care and education. The St. Basile convent, the brick building seen here on the right, was used as a school, boarding house for girls and boys, and convent for nuns. It was later to become Collège Maillet.
The building directly left of the convent is the Hôtel-Dieu Hospital for the aged and infirm. The hospital also operated a model farm that included a dairy. Between the two buildings are the nuns' garden and cemetery, as well as St. Joseph's Chapel. This photo was taken before construction of the nuns' monastery in 1907.
