Sawmills were an inevitable feature of regions whose economy relied heavily on logging. The sawmills processed logs into boards to be used for construction. They were often sited near a waterway to facilitate the springtime log drive. What is more, before electricity appeared, water was the energy source used by sawmills. This photo was taken circa 1920 inside a sawmill. Foreground: logs waiting to be cut. Centre: logs that have been partially cut to make boards. This mill used circular saws like the one seen on the right.
