At spring snowmelt, the timber cut down that winter was floated to sawmills. The log drive consisted in sending the logs floating downriver, sometimes aided by drivers who kept everything moving in the right direction. Shown here: drivers using their long poles to break up a log jam. Driving was hazardous work, given the ever present risk of toppling into the icy water.
