Administrative History
Dennis McGaffigan, son of James McGaffigan, was
born in Churchtown, County Donegal, Ireland in 1842. Later he moved to
the United States, where he fought for the Union Army during the American Civil
War. In 1861 McGaffigan moved to Florenceville, New Brunswick and later
ran a general store. In the spring of 1916, he moved to Saint John, N.B.
Dennis McGaffigan married after moving to New
Brunswick. He and Mary had at least two children: Mary E. and Catherine.
McGaffigan died on 15 November 1917 at the age of 75. He is buried in
the New Catholic Cemetery in Saint John.

Scope and Content
This letter, written by Dennis McGaffigan and
dated 24 January 1912, is addressed to "Cousin". It paints a picture of life
in Florenceville, New Brunswick and discusses family members, neighbours, businesses,
and local events - including several fires. It also discusses the author's
desire to sell his store and move his family to Florida. The signature
is illegible.
