Administrative History
Meteorology developed as a serious science during the mid-19th century. This interest
in weather forecasting followed the invention of the thermometer and barometer and
explanations of atmospheric conditions, all in the 17th century. Many nations established
weather stations. By 1873,international co-ordination was established by setting
standard observational techniques for the exchange of information. Weather forecasting
developed rapidly. Tidal and climatology observations were recorded in weatherstations
and by volunteers. Meteorological services was one of the responsibilities assigned
to the federal Department of Marine and Fisheries at its establishment in 1867.
This function was transferred to the newly formed Department of Transportation in
1936 and moved again to the new Department of the Environment in 1970.
