Horse and wagon at mouth of Aroostook River, Andover
Item - 1920
P36\9

This narrow bridge provided (one way at a time) crossing for horses and buggies. During a spring freshet the water could rise up to meet the bridge; however, this gentleman is obviously crossing during the summer when the water has gone down. This bridge was removed after the Trans Canada Highway was built. About a 1/4 mile down the Aroostook is the old train bridge which has had the rail bed removed and replaced with wooden planks. It has become part of the NB walking/biking trail. Snowmobiles use it in the winter. The bridge crosses close to where the Aroostook River flows into the Saint John River. Just beyond the bridge is a protected area for the endangered flower called Furbish's Lousewart, which only grows in this area. Near this area, also, is the beautiful Four Falls.
