Original Union Depot train station in Saint John

The original Union Depot train station, 99 Station Street, Saint John ca. 1900. Erected in 1884, this structure was demolished and replaced in 1933 by the grand Union Station, which was in turn demolished in 1973. Harbour Station was built at this location, opening for business in 1993.

Likely taken from the courthouse roof. Large white building, far left, is Smith's Hall, with the Methodist Church behind it. On the corner opposite the church are Henry Sharp House and the George Frost House and Store. The Humphrey House is in the tress behind the railway station, far right. The train station and water tower stand between two lines of railway tracks.

This image was long misidentified as the East Saint John, large roundhouse foreground (ICR). However, railway expert, Doug Smith of Canadian Rail magazine, properly identified this image as Medicine Hat in 2017.

Andrew Morasse was born in Port Colborne, Ontario, and attended school there and later at Welland. He came to St. Thomas University as a student in Liberal Arts Program in 1965. These photographs were taken during several trips over to the Miramichi for that purpose during the summer of 1968. They were intended and used for a “Miramichi Night”, held October 12th, 1968 at the Town Hall Auditorium in Newcastle, NB.
