In 1829, the Diocese of Charlottetown was erected, comprised of Prince Edward Island, Cape Breton, and New Brunswick, all of which had previously fallen under the Diocese of Quebec.

In 1842, New Brunswick was erected into its own Diocese. Rt. Rev. William Dollard was its first Bishop.

In 1859, the Diocese of Saint John was erected with Rt. Rev. John Sweeny as Bishop. At this time the Diocese of Chatham was erected as well, both having split-off from the Diocese of New Brunswick

The Diocese of Saint John is a suffragan to the Archdiocese of Moncton.
