  1. To search PANB’s archival descriptions using the Advanced Search screen, enter a search term in the search bar. The field to the right labelled “in” can be used to narrow your search to specific fields of description. Depending on your search purpose each of these choices can meet a specific need. Ex. By searching the title field in conjunction with a proper name will tell you if PANB holds the records of that business or entity. If applicable, select a term in the drop-down menu next to the search bar.
  2. Select “Add new criteria” to further define your search with additional or alternate terms as needed, using AND/NOT/OR options. Commonly called a Boolean search this allows combining search terms to narrow or expand a search. Often used to overcome spelling inconsistencies, St. John and Saint John or varied terminology, railways or railroads.
  3. In the “Filter results by” section you can narrow the results of your search by filtering by the departmental unit – Government, Private Sector, or Photograph records. You can also limit your search to either records that are digitized or not by using the box to the right.
  4. If you know which fonds, collection or series you want to search you can choose it by browsing the list under ↑↓ collection [This is not a commonly used feature].
  5. Under level of description you can confine your search to one of 7 levels of description [Hint: If you want to use fewer than all the levels click on unselect and check off which levels you wish to search].
  6. You can use access points, standardized vocabulary, for your search by selecting from the categories on the left side of the screen.
  7. Using the On or Between section you can incorporate time frame to narrow a search.
  8. Click “Search” to initiate the search and scroll down to see the results.
