BROWN, ANDREW (1858-1930)

BROWN, ANDREW, hardware merchant; b. Chatham, 6 Jul 1858, s/o John Brown and Ellen MacKenzie, natives of Scotland; m. 1889, Wilhelmina MacFarlane, d/o William MacFarlane and Jane Nesmith, of Chatham parish; d. Chatham 16 Dec 1930. Andrew Brown's father had a successful hardware store in Chatham from the 1850s onward, and after they completed their schooling at the Presbyterian Academy, Andrew and his brother Alexander McKenzie Brown joined the business. In 1889 they bought out their father's interest and operated the store in the name of Brown Bros. The store was taken over by William T. Harris in 1898. Later, Andrew Brown was a sales representative for a Saint John grocery wholesaler. His hobby was gardening, and around his home he had "the most ornamental and best cared for gardens in Chatham."

Brown and his wife, Wilhelmina MacFarlane, had a daughter and a son. Their son, Andrew A. Brown, was a plant pathologist who was credited with making an important contribution to the Prince Edward Island potato industry.
