WYSE, HENRY W. (1841-1912)

WYSE, HENRY W., baker and restaurant operator; b. Chatham, 20 Oct 1841, s/o Henry Wyse and Mary Walker; brother of William Wyse; m. 1st, 1866, Mary Ann Nicholson, d/o Robert Nicholson Sr and Mary Ann Osburn, and 2nd, 1896, Emily McMaster, d/o William McMaster and Jane Ingram, of Newcastle; d. there, 29 Sep 1912.

As a young man, Henry W. Wyse worked in his parents' bakery in Chatham, but prior to his first marriage he left the business temporarily and spent a year or more travelling in Europe and as far east as India. He settled in Chatham after his return but moved to Newcastle in the mid 1870s and started a "first class bakery." He also sold confectionery and groceries, and in 1889 he opened one of Newcastle's earlier restaurants.

Wyse was a longtime member of the Orange order and a leading supporter of the Salvation Army on the Miramichi. He was survived in 1912 by his second wife, Emily McMaster, and a son, Robert N. Wyse, who was a dry-goods merchant in Newcastle, and later in Moncton.
